Voter Registration
Durham members of LWVODC teamed with Democracy NC and the Durham Board of Education to register 139 eligible high school students in the first two weeks of September.
New County Commissioner hearings
Following the resignation of Becky Heron (a member of LWVODC) from the Board of County Commissioners, the remaining commissioners will appoint an interim member to serve until the next election for commissioners in 2012. This person must be a Democrat, so the Democratic Party has endorsed a candidate, Hampton Dellinger. However, the group is not required to accept the recommendation and will interview all 10 applicants at a session at 1 p.m. on Sept. 6. Each candidate will have a chance to make an opening statement and then answer questions. All this takes place in the Commissioners Chambers. Further sessions will be announced; if agreement is not reached, a selection will be made by the County Clerk.
Municipal elections
Due to the large field of candidates for Mayor and City Council, there will be a primary election on October 11 with a runoff on November 8. Rather than hold a Voter Forum, we will prepared a Voter Guide, which asks the candidates 7 important questions.
The NC Center for Voter Education's Durham Voters' Guide provides biographical information on each candidate.
