Can members make a difference?

YOU BET... WE'RE SHAPING THE FUTURE NOW . . . And So Can YOU.

Have you ever thought about:

  • Getting more involved and sharing your opinions?
  • Becoming better informed?
  • Shaping the policy decisions that affect your everyday life?

Then consider connecting with a group that helps you do all of that... a group focused on current issues... issues affecting you, your community, your state, and your country... issues on which YOU can make a difference.

That group is the League of Women Voters!

Each member participates in the League as personal time and preference permit. There is a place for everyone and every lifestyle.

Even if you don't have the time to be active now, your membership is important to the League's continued success. Every member becomes a better informed citizen, strengthens the voice of the League, and increases our impact.

Benefits of Membership

We focus on service to the citizens of Orange, Durham and Chatham counties, but the League of Women Voters is organized to parallel the local, state and national levels of government. Membership in any local league automatically confers membership at the state and national levels. With membership comes the opportunity to work on local, state, regional and national issues.

Through participation in League projects, you will contribute valuable service to the community, discover new interests, learn about crucial issues in your community, and meet others in the League who share your interests. As an automatic member of LWV North Carolina and LWV of the United States, you will receive their publications along with the newsletter from the Orange-Durham-Chatham League of Women Voters, the VOTER. (It's published 11 times a year.)

You will be adding your voice to a powerful force of members from all 50 states, Washington DC, the Virgin Islands, and Hong Kong.

---------------------

How much time will it take?

It's up to you! Many members choose to support the League only with their annual dues. Your membership alone gives us the political influence needed to build a voice for citizens and a force for change. We cover a broad spectrum of issues and concerns. You may choose to become involved in one or more of them by:

- actively participating in a group study;

- listening to a panel of experts and/or attending meetings;

- or, just reading about issues of interest to you in one of our publications.

The LWV-ODC League year is July 1 through June 30 of the next year. Membership dues are the most important part of our overall budget, meeting the administrative expenses of our League. A portion of each member's annual dues is paid to the National and State LWV to assist in their efforts on behalf of all Leagues.

Your dues help support the LWV-ODC monthly membership newsletter, VOTER, and the National and State Newsletters. In addition, your dues provide the internal support for our work in the community, and support monthly meetings where friends meet and are educated about important issues. Luncheons and dinner meetings are held several times during the League year as well.

Voter education through candidates forums and the Voters Guides, and community education through the Citizen's Guides of elected officials and local resources would not be possible without your support.
