LWVUS National Popular Vote: Information Meeting.
Delegates at LWV Convention 2008 adopted a study of the feasibility of using the National Popular Vote (NPV) Compact among the states as a method for electing the president. This meeting will be in preparation for consensus on this subject at a March meeting.
Two speakers, Rep. Paul Luebke and Professor Mike Munger, will present the pros and cons of this method of electing the President.
Paul Luebke, is a Democratic member of the NC General Assembly, a professor of Sociology at the UNC-Greensboro, and an author of two books about North Carolina politics: Tar Heel Politics: Myths and Realities (1990) and Tar Heel Politics 2000 (1998). Professor Mike Munger is Chair, Political Science Dept., Duke University.

Durham Forum on Election Methods.
The League of Women Voters of Orange, Durham, and Chatham Counties will host a forum on the election methods used in Durham for its local elections. The form is open to the public.
The forum will provide citizens of Durham the opportunity to be informed about the different election methods currently used in Durham and some recently proposed changes by the Durham Board of Elections, who asked the City Council to switch to the non-partisan plurality method for municipal elections as a budget-cutting measure. The City Council will hold a public hearing on April 6 to hear comments on the proposal.

Medicare for All Forum.
Dr. Flowers will discuss how to strengthen the Medicare system and expand it to everyone through singlepayer. Dr. Flowers is a Maryland pediatrician with experience as a hospitalist at a rural hospital and in private practice.
She is currently working as Congressional Fellow of Physicians for a National Health Program on single-payer health care reform.
The forum is open to the public.

Affordable Housing in Chatham: Will it Happen?.
Speakers: Jeffrey Starkweather, Chair, Affordable Housing Advisory Board and Sybil Tate, Affordable Housing and Green Building Specialist, will address the need for affordable housing in Chatham and the challenges and opportunities the Board and County Commissioners have in ensuring balanced mix of rental and owner-occupied housing that is available to residents of all levels of income.

Also joining us will be Peg Chapin, the State Coach Coordinator for Membership and Leadership Development.

Immigration Reform: Three Views.
The League of Women Voters in Chatham County and the North Carolina Council of Churches are co-sponsoring an informational program entitled: "Immigration Reform: 3 Views".
A panel will discuss the complexities of immigration reform from their first- hand experience. Their presentations will be followed by a question/answer opportunity for the audience. Participants include: The Reverend Donna Banks (Evergreen UMC); Brenda Rogers (LWV); Chris Liu-Beers (Program Associate, NC Council of Churches); and Nayely Perez-Huerta (Advocacy Initiative Program, El Pueblo, Inc.
The 2-hour event will begin at 7:00 PM at the Evergreen United Methodist Church in Chatham, NC.
The program is free and the public is encouraged to attend this nonpartisan, educational program. An educated public is essential to a successful democracy.

Expert panelists will discuss the difficult history of redistricting in NC and why the US Department of Justice must approve North Carolina's redistricting plan; the NC legislative process for establishing Congressional and State Legislative electoral districts and its status; current legislation supporting a non-partisan or independent redistricting commission to redraw Congressional and NC legislative electoral districts; and the pros and cons for redistricting reform. A Question and Answer session will follow the panelists' presentations.
