Durham County Libraries

The Durham Public Library was the first free, tax-supported library in N.C. Its collection includes over 470,000 books in the main library and seven branches. Its operations include a bookmobile and OASIS (Older Adult and Shut-In Services). A variety of children and adult programs, such as book discussions, performing arts series, computer classes, story hours and informational workshops are offered throughout the year. Library cards are free to residents of Durham County. A positive ID with current address is required. Non-residents are charged $45 per year.

The Selena Warren Wheeler Collection of materials by and about African-Americans is recognized as one of the best of its kind in the South. The North Carolina Collection is a collection of Durham-related materials as well as resources about North Carolina as a whole. The North Carolina Collection consists of books, journals, newspapers, microfilm, the Durham Historic Photographic Archives, the NC and Durham vertical files, small manuscript collections and Durham County Library Archives.
