CURBSIDE

Single-family homes within town limits and in 60% of the unincorporated areas of Orange County are eligible for curbside pick up of recyclable materials including newspapers, phone books, glossy magazines, mixed paper, glass bottles & jars, metal cans, plastic bottles.

Get curbside recycling bins at the Administrative Office M-F, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

DROP-OFF

Recycling at drop-off sites includes all items collected at curbside plus corrugated cardboard and aluminum foil and pans.

Recycle brown paper bags can with corrugated cardboard. Recycle plastic bags at supermarkets.

Orange County drop-off sites include five Solid Waste Convenience Centers (see Solid Waste) and six 24-hr Drop-Off Sites:

  • Animal Shelter, Municipal Dr., off Airport Rd., Chapel Hill

  • Carrboro Plaza, Hwy. 54, behind ABC store

  • Cedar Falls Park, Weaver Dairy Rd., Chapel Hill

  • Hampton Pointe, behind Home Depot, Hillsborough

  • Meadowmont, Behind Harris-Teeter, Chapel Hill

  • University Mall, Estes Dr., behind gas station, Chapel Hill

Electronics

Bring computers, peripherals, stereos, fax machines, phones, and TV's to Orange County Landfill or Solid Waste Convenience Centers during regular operating hours (see Solid Waste): Computers, printers, photocopiers (remove toner cartridge), cell phones, telephones, fax machines, radios, stereo receivers, CD and cassette players, VCRs and laser disk players. NO TVs.

Hazardous Household Waste

At O.C. Landfill M-F 10-6, Sat 7:30-12. Paint; garden, pool, cleaning chemicals; auto fluids; fluorescent lights or other items containing mercury. Businesses with small amounts of waste are also welcome. Recycle antifreeze, motor oil, oil filters and batteries at Solid Waste Convenience Centers (see Solid Waste).

Other household hazardous waste should be brought to the Orange County Landfill the first Saturday of the month, March through November, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Items collected include lawn & garden chemicals, automotive chemicals, paints, cleaners, solvents, fluorescent light bulbs and all batteries.

USABLE BUT UNWANTED ITEMS

  • Salvage Sheds: Eubanks Rd., Ferguson Rd., High Rock Rd., and Walnut Grove Church Rd. Convenience Centers (see Solid Waste). Household items, furniture, toys and books in usable condition may be left and are available free on a first-come, first-served basis. No mattresses, building supplies, liquids, chemicals or clothing.

  • PTA Thrift Shops: Donations of saleable clothing, housewares, books, etc., accepted at 103 Jones Ferry Rd., Carrboro (967-1272), and Village Plaza, 99 South Elliott Rd., Chapel Hill, (942-9412) W-Sat. 8:30 -6. Furniture and large electric appliances accepted at Carrboro only--no mattresses or sofa beds. Tax receipts provided. Call 417-0553 for pick up of large items.
